Dive into a creative trio’s breathtaking usage of coastal decor on this stunning home in Malibu, California, turning it into an amazing retreat for artists.

When the creative minds of entrepreneur Charles Kotliar, architect Douglas W Burdge, and interior designer Francesca Grace came together to form this beautiful testament to the modern coastal decor style, the result was a true memento to Malibu’s cultural heritage and artistic influence.
“The home is a sanctuary for artists and cultural tastemakers, it was designed with an artistic lifestyle in mind, catering to those who value privacy, inspiration and connection to nature and community.”
-Serena Grace- Interior designer

When Grace first saw this property, she felt it was a mere shell of what it was destined to be, almost like a sort of “sleeping beauty,” as she put it, begging to be awoken and taken to its full potential.
She started designing the interiors with the coastal decor style in mind, defined by its stunning usage of chalky whites, beige, sand, grey, faded neutrals, soft greens, blues, and navy, paired with a soulful presence of earthy tones, natural elements, and natural materials.
An indoor-outdoor mix was one of this home’s goals, since California‘s weather has a tendency to make this type of home-living possible, and this was yet another of Grace’s goals when designing this home.

Coastal decor is something that engulfed the entire home, normally through the frequent usage of earthy tones and natural materials such as timber, stone, and glass, as well as soft and tactile materials.
Malibu’s character is one of creativity, relaxation, and nature, which was the main source of inspiration for Grace’s usage of the coastal decor style, as she wanted to ensure the home had the same creative energy as its neighbours, many of whom are famous musicians, artists, and cultural icons such as Bob Dylan.
“The flow between indoor and outdoor spaces was key. Malibu’s climate encourages a fluid lifestyle, and I wanted the home to reflect that, with every space inviting conversation, contemplation and creative flow. Think open vistas, tactile textures, and layered design that makes the home feel like a living, breathing artwork.
-Serena Grace

You can truly feel the thought that went behind every single minute detail of this home’s decor, especially in this dining room, which serves as a direct connection to the living room and the outdoor parts of the house.
The coastal decor is most prominent here through the vivid usage of the earthy tones we have seen before, paired with beautiful, yet comfortable chairs, and stone tables made from natural elements that will make anyone who takes a glance reminisce about the United States’ West Coast.
A masterful usage of a simple, yet bold, earthy rug truly makes the dining room stand out from the floor tiles, further setting it as its own section, separated from the living room, all the while fitting into the coastal decor style.

When it came to the living room itself, upon first sight, you are immediately engulfed by the room’s soothing, relaxing feel, which makes you want to stop whatever you’re doing and take a seat while gazing upon the outdoor pool.
Coastal decor doesn’t only focus on making a room feel more relaxing and having a “beachside feel”; it also focuses on providing a beautiful, yet simple aesthetic that often resorts to using minimalistic furniture and neutral tones to help make these feelings and aesthetics possible.

Both the master and guest bedrooms follow the same coastal decor style we have seen so far, choosing to invest in the same type of earthy and neutral tones we have seen so far, all the while providing a fantastic view of the surrounding fields and wildlife.
The minimalist decor in both these rooms not only further brings out the coastal decor style Grace is trying to focus on, but it also helps make these rooms feel like something more than a simple bedroom, which in this case is a room that not only do you sleep in, but somewhere you can take a break, sit down and read a book while occasionally taking breaks to take a look into the portraits.

To end things off, we wanted to take a look at the outside of the home and point out the presence of coastal decor even in the outdoor areas.
Nature is also an extremely present element in this particular part of the house, as we can see through the presence of floor tiles that were designed specifically to make the grass stand out even more, paired with the typical wildlife that is normally present in Malibu.
