Dive Into This Charming California Modern Penthouse in Milan

2025•07•30

Here is how interior designer Giampiero Tagliaferri created this stunning Penthouse in Milan, embroidered with his signature California Modern Style.

With inspiration taken from the old-world charm of luxury European hotels, the interior designer Giampiero Tagliaferri gave this Milan Penthouse a true breath of fresh air, mixing it with different types of design influences and eras, turning it into a perfect home for an art-collecting couple.

Much like himself, Tagliaferri’s clients divide their lives between Milan and Los Angeles, so this penthouse’s artistic choices, namely in terms of decor and furniture, were made to embrace this intercontinental lifestyle, choosing to take in various different influences in the design process.

California modern is a style that is defined by its overarching use of neutral tones, natural light, open floor plans, clean lines, and simple shapes, as well as a preference for local artisans when it comes to picking out the various pieces, which are all elements that Tagliaferri takes greatly into consideration in every corner of this home.

The living room is a great way to start our tour through Tagliaferri’s project, since it captures the very essence of this project in an extremely complete way, combining various different art pieces, yet keeping the room engulfed in the California Modern style, capturing the elegant, modern, and relaxing essence of this design style.

This is done through the masterful usage of minimalist furniture, smooth pastel tones, paired with other neutral tones, and by using this room’s space to its advantage, making sure there is plenty of space and a way for natural light to enter.

The room’s ambience is calm, yet just a little bit daring, perfect for the client to sit down and relax, read a book, or even to just spend some time dozing off in their own thoughts in the endearing tranquility this room provides.

Moving on to the dining room, we can see that California Modern is still the predominant style Tagliaferri is going for, keeping in mind his client’s artistic background, of course, opting to keep the artistic decor present, this time through the inclusion of two wooden masks.

The core color tones we saw in the living room are still very much present here, creating a contrast between the dark-brown wooden floors and the beige cushions, and the white walls.

On the other hand, all of the furniture has simple and clean shapes, which not only fit the California Modern style, but also make the room feel much more soothing and relaxing, much like the living room we previously saw.

The corkscrew staircase is made with rosewood steps that are wrapped in a shiny lacquer finish that exudes Milanese modernism, which are, in and of themselves, characteristic elements of the California Modern style, making this staircase feel like more than a mere lever to the upper floor.

The artistic influence is present, even here, as a bust by Vanessa Beecroft is sitting beside the staircase, lying on top of a plinth, serving almost as an invitation for visitors and residents alike to go up the staircase and to keep exploring this penthouse.

The same contrasting colors we saw in the previous rooms are still very present in here, of course, maintaining the typical neutral tones that are so common in the California Modern style.

Last but not least, we’ll be taking a look at how Tagliafarri used the California Modern style once more, in order to make this bedroom feel luxurious, cozy, and sophisticated, all at the same time.

The color scheme is the same one as we have seen all over the penthouse, yet the furniture in this bedroom is slightly different from the one we have seen so far, as Tagliaferri chose to use furniture that had sharper and more complex shapes, though he still chose to use smooth lines in some of the decor such as the bedside lamp.

Tagliaferri’s masterful usage of the Californian Modern style’s elements and features made it so this penthouse was able to become the absolutely stunning home that this art-collecting couple was looking for.

By sprinkling in different cultural influences, styles, and art pieces all throughout the penthouse, Tagliaferri turned this project into a unique testament to this couple’s love for art and their intercontinental lifestyle.
