Let’s take a look at how Wes Gordon and Paul Arnhold’s NYC Home used traditional furniture to further bring out the home’s artistic feel.

According to Paul Arnhold, Wes Gordon’s husband, “no room is off-limits.”, adding that, “The kids know that there are nice things here, but those things were made by people with a lot of love. And we treat things that were made with love with love.”, which serves as a perfect introduction to the this family’s luxurious, almost picture-perfect lifestyle.
With the help of their lifetime collaborator, the interior designer Stephen Sills, this family, consisting of Carolina Herrera’s creative director, a glassblower craftsman, and their two children, ended up with a breathtaking apartment in New York City, masterfully decorated with traditional furniture.
Sills has been working with this couple for a long time already, and after spending over a decade living in various neighbourhoods, the couple finally decided to settle for this classic 1920s building, which led to the choice of traditional furniture.

The dining room features an almost Victorian style of decoration, opting to create a truly elegant and refined dining experience, pairing with the traditional furniture we spoke of before, namely these beautiful green chairs, a dark-brown dining table, the beige console table, and the white decorative pillar, on which a sculpture is being placed above.
A mixture of golden, chic colors with colder and more minimalistic colors makes this room feel relaxing and elegant, and also allows for a very favorable environment for Sill’s clients to show off their art collection, which was one of their wishes for this project.
While a lot of people may think that using traditional furniture can make your home feel too antique and outdated, a good mixture of more modern elements, such as the white rug we see on the floor, can really help a room feel unexpected and fresh, and most importantly, youthful and up-to-date.

The wallpaper is the most eye-catching feature of this room, since it pops off instantly, and complements beautifully with the remainder of the patterns and warm colors used throughout the room, keeping the usage of traditional furniture as one of the main pieces of the design style that Sills is prioritizing.
The furniture continues with some of the golden motifs and features we saw in the previous room, and the artistic decor is once again being displayed in a very outgoing fashion, once again setting the client’s personality and love for art as one of the main themes that is being emanated all over the room.
Children’s toys can be seen in a basket underneath the console table, which helps set the home’s vibe as a comfy family home, where the kids can run around and play freely, unbothered by uncomfortable furniture that takes up a lot of room, instead, the only thing this couple’s children has to worry about, is what games they shoud play together, and what toys should they choose.

In the kids’ room, this feeling of liberty for the children to play in can be felt even more, which Sills made clear in the usage of plushies, toys, books, and silly paintings on the wall, making this a perfect place for an afternoon well-spent for this couple, playing with their kids.
The parents’ love for their children is something made abundantly clear throughout this home, and this room is the ultimate testament to this, since this is also the only room in the entire home where traditional furniture isn’t the type of furniture most used, in a way to maximize comfort for the kids’ playtime.

Lastly, let’s take a look at the master bedroom, where the masterful usage of modern furniture is still easily recognizable, even though this room’s purpose isn’t to be as elegant, sophisticated, and beautiful as the other rooms, but rather to serve as a comfortable place for the family to rest in.
This doesn’t stop this bedroom from being a true ode to elegant comfort, as it blends in a touch of minimalism and neutral tones into the mix, adding a sense of soothing serenity to the entire bedroom.
And that concludes our overview of this fantastic apartment in the City that Never Sleeps, and how Stephen Sills used traditional furniture to bring out the best in the home for his clients and their family.
