Let’s explore this Surside Penthouse, which uses the Memphis style to perfectly blend in contemporary influences for a New York art collector.

This Penthouse in Surfside, Florida, is a true testament to contemporary decor, art, and the Memphis style, which was made specifically for a New York art collector and his family.
But before we start our tour through this lovely penthouse, let’s talk a bit about the Memphis style. The Memphis Style is a design style created by the Memphis group, and is an easily recognizable design style, seeing as it blends art deco with pop art.
It was born to oppose the modern, minimalist styles that are now dominant in interior design, which means this design style uses loud colors, bold shapes, different textures, different proportions in furniture, and contemporary art pieces.

Starting off with the living room, we can already see pop art influences and unorthodox shapes in the furniture and decor, as it was to be expected with this penthouse.
The neon art piece is a centerpiece for the entire living room, as it immediately stands out, capturing the attention of anyone who is visiting this room for the first time
The remaining furniture and the room’s overall simple color palette (consisting of blue, yellow, and white) make the room feel cozy and welcoming, yet very unique and different from what you would expect from a regular living room.

Keeping the main design philosophy of the Memphis Style, the dining room is also quite different from what someone would expect, mixing in huge phrases on the wall, breathtaking art pieces, with sophisticated chairs and a marble table.
This sections keep the same emotions we felt in the living room, opting for a more relaxing approach, while maintaining the Memphis style’s characteristic elements, namely the loud colors and unique decor elements.
The usage of round shapes for the table and the suspension lamp creates contrast with the rectangular-shaped painting, along with the very angular font used for the writing on the wall.

This room, however, takes a much different approach to the Memphis style from the ones that we have seen so far, leaning much more into the loud colors we have seen before (namely yellow and green), choosing to use white as a more situational color.
Yellow is everywhere in this room, from the sofa, the pillows, the table, to de bananas on the wall and the painting, while white is only being used as a background for the bananas to pop out even more, which goes in direct contrast to the overwhelming usage of white in the previous rooms.
This room has a much different feeling to it; instead of being only relaxing and cozy, this room is much more fun and lively, perfect for inviting guests over and talking about anything you want, or just playing a few board games.

Contrast between similar rooms is again a theme that is being explored in these two bathrooms, similarly to the two living rooms we saw before, where one was leaning more into a lively, fun feeling, whereas the other one was much more soothing and simple.
In this case, one of the bathrooms is mostly white, with a few decor elements, with a deep blue color, and a very unique shape, whereas the other one has a mostly yellow color theme, with a distinctive painting and an oddly-shaped vase.
Memphis style is being used in both rooms, of course, albeit in very different ways, which makes for an interesting dynamic in this penthouse, where contrast between rooms is a recurring theme, which makes traversing through the penthouse that much more interesting.

Lastly, let’s take a look at these two separate bedrooms, which are once again entering the contrasting theme we have seen before, in a sort of cold versus warm colors, much like the other pairs, although this time yellow isn’t being used.
In the blue room, the furniture is mostly minimalistic and simple, choosing to instead make a bigger impact based on the painting and the suspension lamp.
The orange bedroom chooses to differentiate itself in its use of abstract shapes and patterns, and its leaning view to the outdoor section of this home.
Both serve as spectacular uses of the Memphis style to bring about different emotions and a unique appeal to each of these bedrooms.
